Congrats if you’ve just bought your first electric car! You are taking a huge step toward saving not only the environment but also your own money. In order to get the most out of your new investment, it’s a good idea to have a dedicated charging station in your home.

Electric vehicles come with a charge cord (or charger) and usually have an adapter for a 120V 15A or 20A regular outlet. This type of charge cord plugs into a regular outlet (receptacle), similar to most of the outlets in your home and takes about 9 hours to charge your car for a 40-mile drive (charging approx 2-4 miles per hour depending on the size of EV).

EV manufactures also offer adapters for higher voltage outlets like a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet (50A 240V receptacle like an oven or RV outlet). This 240V option will allow you to charge the EV in a shorter amount of time (charging approx 20+ miles per hour depending on the size of vehicle). While the electric code now requires electricians to install a dedicated electric vehicle charger circuit in new houses, older homes do not have them.

It is important to use a dedicated electrical circuit to charge you EV whether using a 120V regular outlet or a 240V charger cord or wall mounted EV charger. We suggest installing a 50A or 60A dedicated circuit for a either a NEMA 14-50 outlet (this is more universal) or a EV specific charger (like a Tesla Wall Charger).
